chalk pastel heroes and heroines

Every world has a special hero or heroine and I asked the students in the Fanciful Frolics camp through North Vancouver Community Arts Council to draw a picture of their famous person.

Using chalk pastel and in this case, watercolor paper because that is what I had on hand, the children began thinking who would be the "famous" person of their world.

We discussed that their hero/heroine did not need to be a person. It could be absolutely anything!  And what a wide, interesting variety was created!  I love the different styles the children used to create these works of art too.

I gave them a black oil pastel to outline their drawings with so they didn't loose their pencil marks. And then encouraged them to layer, layer, layer the chalk pastel instead of trying to blend it with their fingers.

And then I encouraged them to layer the pastels some more as the words of every art instructors nightmare began to be uttered, "I'm done".

We made it our "secret mission" to make sure no one would know what color paper we had used to make our artwork.

Hey, whatever works to get them to layer the colors as sometimes telling them mixing the different pastels to create a variety of the same color doesn't sound all that appealing.

But a "secret mission" on the the other hand......

Below are the sweet results. Tomorrow Jean-Michel Basquiat inspired villains!
