acrylic painted doughnuts

This will be the third time I have done this project in one form or another, I keep coming back to it because it is truly one of the favorites among kids.

I realized I had a full class of children in Wednesday's class who had not done this project yet and so knew it would be a lot of fun for them to experience while making me a very popular art teacher.

Win/win!

Anytime you get to eat the props at the end of class, it's a good time.

I introduced the children to American artist Wayne Thiebaud, who get this, is 95 years old and still painting.

Wayne Thiebaud, "dessert circle"

Picture after picture of cake, candy, ice cream and pie were shown to many exclamations of "yum"!

And with that, I asked them to create their own paintings so delicious the viewer would want to eat them.

And as you can see, they students did just that, along with a fun lesson on tint and of course a sweet treat to eat at the end.

DOUGHNUTS!!

Wednesday's class continues on an unintentional food theme....from healthy foods (fruit bowls) to not so healthy food, doughnuts.

The look on the faces of the boys when I placed doughnuts in front of them was priceless, they were big fans to say the least.

I showed them some work created by Wayne Thiebaud to use for inspiration and then handed out the chalk pastels.

I encouraged them to add A LOT of white in their color choices, like Mr. Thiebaud does, and also brought out the color wheel to encourage them to make use of complimentary colors for shading and such.

We also discussed horizon lines and I showed them how it doesn't always have to be with the doughnut.

And how to use the same color for the background in two different values, using darker values for background and lighter for foreground.

Of course the best part was when they finished these delicious looking works of art, they got to eat it!

Oh Wayne Thiebaud, how we love you

I fell in love with the work of Wayne Thiebaud from the moment I saw he shared my love of cake, candy, and all other sweets.   What's not to love about a man who creates works of art of what I like to refer to as the most important food group, sweets?

And I believe my students share the same belief that Wayne Thiebaud is great.  That's because when I decided to introduce his artwork to inspire them

and it includes DOUGHNUTS!

they quickly take up the chorus of singing, "Wayne is great.  He likes to paint chocolate cake"

And so without further ado, here is how we started the second day of art camp during the B.C. school strike.   It's hard to be upset with the delay of the first day of school when you get to eat the props after creating these masterpieces.
