Blind Contour Drawing

We ended day one of the Art and Animal camp working on blind contour drawing.  This is a great exercise in observation skills and getting kids to concentrate on what they see. With this age group, it is also just lots of fun to see what you drew once finished.  There were lots of giggles.

Each student picked an animal from the reference files to use for this project. They were then given a sharpie pen that was poked through a paper plate, so they couldn't see the paper or what they were drawing.

Then looking at only the reference picture they began to draw and I told them it was best if they didn't lift up their pen, creating a continuous line drawing.

Some listened.

Some didn't.

After they completed the first one, I had them repeat the exercise a couple more times to overlap their images.

Then they chose shapes within the lines to color with watercolor. Another opportunity to teach them some different watercolor techniques.

Below are the results. I think they are a collection of very interesting abstract and whimsical animals paintings.
