A watercolor composition study

I have a new student who just joined the studio.

I asked her what she enjoyed creating and she said landscapes. I immediately thought of a project I did last fall with a group of students and pulled out the watercolors, a viewfinder, and told her to find a reference picture of a landscape she thought was pretty.

Then we created three rectangles on a piece of watercolor paper and placing the viewfinder in three different positions on the reference, created watercolor landscapes.

Before starting, we went over a variety of different ways she could use the watercolors.

Scrumbling, scratching, graded washes, blooming, dry brushing, among other techniques for her to use to create her paintings.

Below are the beautiful results. A stunning sunset on the B.C. coast.

Welcome to Kudzu Studio Ms. S!!
